NFL Free Agency Updates and Analysis

By Tanner Ostrowski

March 7th, 2025: The Tampa Buccaneers re-signed Linebacker Lavonte David to a one-year deal worth $10 million, with $9 million of it guaranteed. Overall, it is a fair deal as Tampa Bay keeps a player that is consistent for them and David has played with the Buccaneers his entire career. He is also getting good money considering he is 35 years of age.

March 7th, 2025: The Tennessee Titans released one of their top edge rushers in outside linebacker Harold Landry III, who has 50.5 sacks throughout his seven year career per NFL’s website (technically six years since he tore his ACL in 2022 per ESPN’s Turron Davenport). The Titans saved approximately $11.9 million and could save $17.5 if Landry is assigned as a post-June 1st cut. Tennessee could draft an edge rusher with the 1st overall pick in the NFL Draft (maybe Abdul Carter) or could trade down and draft multiple edge rushers. That is the only way this is a good move for Tennessee. However, they could sign an edge rusher in free agency to replace him due to the cap space they gained. On the other hand, Landry III could have a great market because he is one of the top edge rushers/outside linebackers in the free agency pool right now. He may make more money than he did than he previously did, where he signed a five-year, $87 million deal (the annual average was $17.4 million) in 2022 per Davenport. Overall, this situation should be interesting to watch.

March 7th, 2025: According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Washington Commanders released DT Jonathan Allen. Overall, this a great situation for both sides, as the Commanders save $16.3 in cap space while Allen goes onto the free agent market, where he is sure to receive plenty of interest and possibly big time money. The only cons of this trade are that Washington made a tough decision to cut a good player, while Allen, who missed games last season and is 30 years old, may be taken advantage of by other teams and they may try to rip him off because of these factors. That is the reality of business in sports.

March 6th, 2025: Linebacker Bobby Wagner and the Washington Commanders agreed to a one-year contract with a max value of $9.5 million and has $8 million of the deal guaranteed per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on X. This is good for both sides as Wagner gets his well-deserved money and now comes back to the team following their playoff run to the NFC Championship team. Meanwhile, the team gets to keep a reliable player that provides a veteran presence in their locker room.

March 6th, 2025: The Jacksonville Jaguars shockingly released TE Evan Engram per Tom Pelissero. The team is seemingly getting rid of their own weapons left and right. It is a very confusing move, as their only reliable receiving option is now WR Brian Thomas Jr. They do not have many other weapons left except RBs Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby. Hopefully, the team has a plan in place in regards to upgrading their offensive arsenal.

March 5th, 2025: The Los Angeles Chargers let go of one of the top DEs in Joey Bosa. This is mind-boggling at first sight, as he produced at a high level. However, after looking closer, it is understandable why they released him. Despite being one of the best at his position, he has participated in only 28 games the last three seasons per ESPN’s Kris Rhim. It also gives the Chargers more salary cap room, as the release saved them $25.36 million. Some team may want to pay him, but he may look for a one-year prove it deal to get a better contract the next go-around. This is an interesting thing to watch out for.

March 5th, 2025: The Philadelphia Eagles have yet again re-signed one of their own players, as they negotiated a deal with Linebacker Zack Baun for three-years and $51 million per Adam Schefter of ESPN. Baun was essential to the Eagles’ Super Bowl run this last season, as he made many key plays for the team. His annual salary will average $17 million per year now.

March 5th, 2025: The Las Vegas Raiders and DE Maxx Crosby agreed to a contract extension that makes him the highest paid player that is a non-QB. The extension is for three years and worth $106.5 million. The annual average for this approximately pays him $35.5 million. It is kind of shocking considering there are a few edge rushers better than him. Eventually, there might be a lower-tier player that will get paid more than him, but that is how business in the NFL works.

March 5th, 2025: According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks have released WR Tyler Lockett. Lockett has been a consistent WR for the Seahawks for many years. However, he fell out of favor because fellow WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerged as a top weapon for Seattle. This will give Lockett a chance to prove that he can still produce at a decent level, even though he is 32 years old. He will most likely try to sign a short-term contract with a team that has championship aspirations due to his age. He can also provide mentorship to the younger WRs on a team due to his experience in the league.

March 4th, 2025: The Dallas Cowboys and DT Osa Odighizuwa completed negotiations for a contract worth $80 million over four years. This keeps the Cowboys’ defense somewhat stable under a new defensive scheme run by defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who was the head coach of the Chicago Bears last year. Odighizuwa’s performance could slip due to a different scheme, but he will get better as time goes on. Otherwise, this was a good deal for both sides.

March 4th, 2025: WR Davante Adams was released from the New York Jets according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on X. The Jets saved approximately $30 million from the transaction. He is officially one of the top free agents in the pool of players and many teams will be interested. There will be plenty of teams making an effort to sign him. There are rumors from a lot of websites that he will either sign with a West Coast team, the New Orleans Saints, the Kansas City Chiefs or even join QB Aaron Rodgers (who was released earlier this offseason). Another possibility is a Green Bay Packers reunion, but it is less likely then the previous options.

March 4th, 2025: The Philadelphia Eagles and RB Saquon Barkley agreed to a historic contract per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who tweeted that Barkley is going to make $41.2 million over two years. It is the first time a RB will make $20 million plus annually. This is a smart move by both the Eagles and Barkley, as he played a huge part in their Super Bowl winning season, and now, gets the money he deserves.
